5:19 and What About Supper |
Okay, here I am, at the computer. I've done the blog ring - reading and commenting here and there. Checked my email. Answered the phone. Read more blogs. I look at the clock and realize suppertime is upon us. Now here is the dillemma. (which always reminds me of a former classmate's last name, Dieleman) I have no supper idea.
Lance has just walked in the door. He chuckled at me when he discovered me blogging. He doesn't know what I'm writing about yet.
Okay, there's no supper idea, only a vague thought, "eggs", okay, maybe something with eggs. There is another option, which tonight I am not fond of. THE CAFETERIA. As a perk of working here we are allowed to eat some of our meals in the school's cafeteria. The food is genarally good - but there is a definite lack of fresh vegetables and fruit. We ate there last night and today for lunch. I don't feel like having another meal there... and in fact I feel a little bit like cooking. What I don't feel like is coming up with an idea of what to cook.
Roles...As the woman of the house it is part of my role to be the food preparation coordinator/specialist. This involves making the grocery list - asking for some input from Lance (which gets censored by my health conscious eye) It also involves doing most of the grocery shopping. These tasks are easy. The last and most difficult task is coming up with ideas of things to make for meals and snacks. I have become an expert when it comes to combating the phrase, "We have nothing to eat" - usually offering three options of food to eat/make. Anyways I think my resources are drying up.
Meal Planning. My friend Jenna has begun planning the weeks meals in advance - before going grocery shopping - and buying what she needs for those meals. Then she doesn't have to spend the time each night thinking about what to make. This might be something I should try. I grew up with my mom coming up with the supper idea and having it on the table in about 30 minutes - I am impressed with this and have generally adopted this style myself. But it is failing me now.
Salad. If the lettuce is still good I could make a really nice main course salad with seeds and nuts and apples.
Maybe this weekend I will try the plan ahead idea.
Back-up Plans. We usually have a frozen pizza or pizza fixings for a night like tonight. But Superstore has unintentionally been foiling my usual back-up plans. For two weeks in a row they have been completely out of the pitas I usually buy - in large quantities - and freeze for making quick pizzas at such a time as this. Two weeks in a row - no pitas at all!
It's 5:34. Enough talk. It is now time to take action. I'll let you know what I, the Food Preparation Coordinator, come up with.
I'm curious to know what you others do - what roles do you play in this important area of every home? Do you plan ahead? Eat out a lot?
