Prenatal Updates and Beating the System
I had my monthly prenatal appointment here are the stats:

Weight gain: 7.7lbs! Hooray, last time I had lost 2lbs, and have been trying to eat a lot so I'll gain - appears to be working!

Heart Beats: They've got them! Which we already saw on the ultrasound, but now I got to hear them. They sounded like galloping horses under water.

Growth: My uterus is now just below my belly button - apparently this is about where a woman who is 20wks pregnant with one baby would be. I'm 17 wks with two, so feel encouraged about their growth.

Ultrasound: We have an ultrasound scheduled for January 26. Lance is very excited!

Future: The doctor said, two times over the course of the appointment, "You're going to need some different clothes very soon". I plan to scope out thrift stores and sales for super low rise pants that will hopefully work till I'm big enough for maternity clothes. No luck today, only high waisted and tapered jeans available. Not for me.

Movement: I felt the babies move for the first time on Saturday. I was sitting reading and felt a "tap, tap" inside my lower abdomen. Now, I've had all my other organs for 25 years and I've never felt anything like that, so I deduced it must've been the babies. Since then I think I've felt them a bit here and there. I'm really looking forward to when I can really feel them more often.

I felt the appointment went really well. And left with a big grin on my face. Lance had a meeting so couldn't come, but asked me to report all the details. He kept asking if the doctor said anything else, pumping me for information. Usually I overdo it with details in his opinion well in this case there's no way I could overdo it.

He is so excited about these little ones. Yesterday he said, "I just can't wait till we have babies to take care of... I'm bored" We both chuckled at this realizing that when these little ones come we won't have time to be bored. I told him I'm so glad about how excited he is, I just appreciate it so much. To him it's the only choice, why would he not be over-the-top excited? I know this isn't a given and so don't take it for granted. He continues to be such a blessing to me.

Beating the System

I had a dental check-up today. First one since being married. We didn't get benefits until recently (like within the last year) and therefore didn't see the dentist. Anyways I finally booked the appointment and went. Well folks, I beat the system. Apparently my teeth and gums looked so good that the dentist was wondering if I'd had them cleaned recently. Nope. And to be honest with you all - I NEVER floss. I just brush twice a day. That's it. Lance brought up the fact that I don't eat sugar, ah, perhaps that contributes as well. Anyways I was glad to hear that despite my dental hiatus I was in great shape. When the receptionist asked if I wanted to book a cleaning I politely declined. I also got imprints taken for a night guard. Yuck that was an unpleasant experience, but hopefully worth it. I'm a notorious teeth grinder and have lots of jaw/neck/headache pain because of it. We're hoping that this will help. I'm not looking forward to learning to sleep with it but I'm sure I'll get used to it.

Well that's all for today - oh yeah, update on the dishes, I haven't done them every night, but am certainly still on top of them. Feeling encouraged about this but realize I better not let my guard down.

Hope you are well.

I love that when pregnant women are pregnant and they gain weight it's exciting - for ME it is just the most beautiful comment I can hear...and the only time a women will appreciate when someone notices weight gain. I love it!

Oh and I'm not sure if this is really your style or not, but perhaps it will help...for clothes. My friend Courtenay just had a baby and has a similar body type to you...for most of the time she didn't wear maternity clothes (mind you she only had one baby!). She did two things. First, while she was still smaller she wore her regular pants and didn't do the button up - she put a hair elastic to grasp the button area shut (kinda) and then wore mens undershirts so it covered it overtop, WITH a normal T-shirt overtop. THEN when she was bigger she bought too big yoga pants (so the legs were baggy) and cut a "zipperlike" feature in the middle and weave the elastic in and out, with the undershirts.

    Just my suggestion for clothes.
OH and one other thought...(which I'm sure you've heard before and I really have no experience with)...your teeth will probably be harder to be kept cavity free after the babies, so perhaps a cleaning before would do you good? And plus...it might be another few years before you get there again...:)

    (Oooh. Long comment.)
    Lots of Love,
    Kortney

Hurrah for the good pre-natal appointment! I bet if you "put the word out" women will come to you with bags of maternity clothes. They are ridiculously expensive to buy and women wear them such a short time. Oh this twin thing is SO exciting!

I talked to my dentist about cavities. He said that sugar, chocolate milk, coffee with sugar in it and fruit juice are the major causes of cavities. The liquids are bad because they completely coat the teeth. So hurrah for you not eating sugar ... when you can't have dessert, think about your nice, clean cavity-free teeth.

OH I WISH I COULD HAVE GONE WITH YOU IN LANCE'S ABSENCE!! Oh well, thanks for the update. I think it's so cool that you can feel movement - little "Hi Mommy, just getting comfy in here" moments!

    I love you

Definatly put the word out. You might get crazy stuff from the eighties but then you'll still have something to wear mucking (ie cleaning with bleach or when the urge to make mud pies in the backyard hits you) Our thrift shops are filled with clothes in size small and medium. (I assume your size?) I could always keep my eye out too.

I forgot to comment earlier on your post about your proud moment with Lance. I just wanted to mention how nice it is to treasure such moments. It reminds us why and how happy we are to be helpmates to such wonderful men.

My midwife suggested the book "having Twins" by Elizabeth Noble. I paged through it quickly while I waited for my ride to come back and it looked like it focused on a natural and healthy pregnancy with the goal of a regular birth, but still touched the reality that c-sections are commonplace. A fact I thought was interesting was that c-sections have not played a major roll in lowering the risk of infant death in twins- but the fact that women are healthier, know earlier about their twins and so gaining more weight, and all round GESTATING longer that are making for the success rate of twins. Anyway, I think the book is supposed to be more open minded and not millitant towards "natural". If you cant find it, my midwife has two copies and I could probably borrow it for you if you wanted. :O)

And yip yip on gaining 7 pounds! Good girl. So far I've gained 9 pounds, but I started out a whole lot more padded than you did and I'm only making one. ;)
